Feliz Navidad from La Paz

We pulled in a week early to La Paz to prepare for the holidays. A friendly town with plenty to do. The town has maintained it's authentic flavor along with all the comforts a gringo could want.

In the spirit of the season, the palm tree lined malecon was lit up with lights. Around the main cathedral (church) the streets were closed to traffic and filled with booths of anything you could imagine to buy for gifts, clothes, toys and food.

We walked the streets each day to find new discoveries. One of our favorites had to be the ever so festive baby chicks for sale. Yes, they were each dyed amazing shades of, blue, pink, green and their generic yellow.

My second favorite find was this shop of open bins filled with seasoning and dried goods from Jicama to Jalapenos and beans of every kind. Though no one there spoke english and I certainly didn't know enough spanish to learn the use for each of these goods, we had a great time trying.

One of the best gifts we received this Christmas was the safe delivery of our new friends the Schmid family on their boat Lawur. After many attempts to solve their boat/engine problems they decided to leave the dock in San Diego no matter what.
Without the ability to move their boat in reverse nor throttle down without the engine dying, they blazed their way down the outside of the coast of Baja. They beat up wind to La Paz and as the engine died again, they coasted into Marina de La Paz at 8 am the day before Christmas. We all celebrated Christmas Eve together in the marina and then Christmas day out on the Magote, which is a big beach across the bay. Everyone brought a pot luck meal and enjoyed good company and great food. Our ham was a big hit.

Santa was very good to us all and they boys have especially enjoyed their new scooters up and down the dock.
